Ben Loyola calls for opponent to return Clunker Cash
April 28, 2010
Republican Congressional candidate Ben Loyola called on fellow candidate Scott Rigell to return the $444,500 he and his company received from Barack Obama’s stimulus-fueled Cash for Clunkers.
“I think it’s important that if candidates are going to contrast themselves with Obama’s economic policies that they shouldn’t make money from them,” said Loyola in announcing his call. “Rigell should return the money and say ‘thanks, but no thanks.’”
Loyola thinks Republicans deserve a clearer message from candidates, and right now Rigell’s actions couldn’t be farther from that. His actions confuse our conservative message and imply that it’s okay to flip flop when it’s financially convenient.
”Rigell criticized Nye for supporting the stimulus package, which was used to support and extend Cash for Clunkers,” said Loyola. “But he didn’t mind benefiting from it to the tune of nearly a half-million dollars.”
Loyola said that kind of mixed-message hypocrisy is the last thing we need to send to Congress. “If you’re going to present yourself as a Conservative and campaign against Nye and Obama’s policies, you shouldn’t be financially benefiting from them.
The Cash for Clunkers deal was extended and partially funded through stimulus funds. Congressman Glenn Nye voted for both.
Earlier, Rigell had called on Nye to return $14,000 in contributions from Rep. Charlie Rangel, criticizing politicians for using politics for “personal gain.” However, with regards to his own personal gain, Rigell says he had “no ethical problem whatsoever.”
“I’m amazed that Rigell thinks $14,000 is an ethical problem and the money should be returned, but taking over $440,000 in Obama stimulus is no problem” asked Loyola. “Ethics shouldn’t have a price tag.”
Loyola urges Rigell to return the $444,500 to the taxpayers before the June 8th primary.
