Loyola calls Nye’s incompetence “an embarrassment”

April 23, 2010

Republican Congressional Candidate Ben Loyola issued his strongest criticism yet of Congressman Glenn Nye’s handling of the Virginia/Florida battle for aircraft carrier homeporting.

“Nye’s incompetence in national defense is costing our region and our nation and has become an embarrassment in Congress,” said Loyola. “He is woefully out of touch, extremely over his head, and lacks any real solutions to this or any other problem.”

Nye announced that the Navy had delayed plans to move a Norfolk-based aircraft carrier until 2019 “at the earliest” and was quickly rebuked by Florida Congressman Ander Crenshaw who asserted that the timetables had been unchanged, with 2019 being a “worst case scenario.” Congressman Crenshaw further asserted that the Navy provided Nye with the same information that was provided to everyone else.

Loyola added “The worst case scenario is continuing to have inexperienced and incompetent leadership in Congress like we do now.”

“It's obvious that Rigell’s handlers don't want him taking questions and speaking in anything but controlled environments and hope that his television commercials do all his work for him,” added Loyola. “Voters should know that if this is the way Rigell campaigns, this is what they can expect of him in office.”

Loyola’s solution to the “either Florida or Virginia” debate is to build two new carriers.

“Rather than engage in a political tug-of-war over the location of existing carriers that are already insufficient in number, let’s have a real solution that serves our national security interests and provides real economic stimulus as well. The additional carriers will also allow for shortened deployment cycles addressed in the Fleet Response Plan and lessen the demands that are straining our service members and their families.”

Building two new carriers means countless jobs and shared carrier responsibilities between Virginia and Florida without the economic and strategic shortcomings of an “either-or” strategy that has been pursued thus far.

Loyola is seeking the Republican nomination in a June 8th primary against 5 other candidates.
